One of the most common questions we receive at Stitch & Style is, "What size rug do I actually need?" Picking the right design is fun, but getting the proportions right is what makes a room look professionally designed. A rug that is too small can make a room feel disjointed, while one that is too large can overwhelm the space.
Whether you are looking for a Washable Cotton Rug or a Jute piece, follow our quick guide to measuring like a pro.
1. The Living Room: "All Legs on Board"
For a cohesive look, try to get a rug large enough so that at least the front legs of all your seating furniture (sofas and chairs) rest on it.
-
Small Space: A 5' x 8' rug works well under a coffee table.
-
Average Space: An 8' x 10' is the gold standard for most American living rooms.
2. The Dining Room: The Chair Rule
In the dining room, your rug should be large enough to pull out a chair and still have all four legs remain on the rug. Usually, this means the rug should be 24 to 30 inches wider than the dining table on all sides.
3. Hallways & Entryways: The Runner Clearance
For our Hallway Runner Rugs, you want to leave about 4 to 6 inches of visible floor on all sides of the runner. This "border" prevents the rug from looking like wall-to-wall carpeting and makes your hallway feel wider and more intentional.
4. Use the Tape Trick
Before you click "Buy," take some blue painter's tape and outline the rug size on your floor. This gives you a 1:1 visual of how the rug will occupy the space. It’s the best way to ensure your new Stitch & Style piece fits your vision perfectly.
